Kensington market is a multicultural neighborhood in downtown Toronto. The site is located on Kensington Avenue, which is the main street of the Kensington market.

On the previous stage,we are focusing more on the conceptual ideas of our project:an inverse public and private relationship introduced by an central passage way connecting the three residences. Moreover, we set up a rule that public area has more void space (more roof openings) while private area has more solid space (less roof openings).

Then on the development stage, we reinforce our idea by setting up the openings more logically and making the differences between solid and void more clearly. In addition, a big development has also been made on the vertical or sectional plane (apparent in the central passage way): we transform the supporting walls into benches by making openings on the wall, set up small family businesses for each household by giving each family a stand (an opening with a movable wall) and carve the walls with movable windows for the and 4-people courtyard. Thus these non-fixed openings become endless changeable and provide people a great many opportunities to decide the space either to be private, public or semi-public. The idea here is to make these openings not only as a skin for the building, but also urban furniture to attract people to come and have a cozy rest.

In terms of technologies, we decide to continue to use solar panels on public space and thermal water facilities on private space and then introduce green roof as the courtyard for the 6-people-residence. Drainage systems are also added for the 2-people and 4-people courtyards to recycle the precipitation into irrigation.

Shadow Studies

Shadow Studies

In our details section, we focus on the roof strategies. There are three distinctive roof structures for our project:

1) Regular Roof-Waterproofing below insulation: This structure is our primary roof structures in both public and private space to make the roof self-watertight. The difference between public and private structure is that the former has more small roof openings and is covered with solar panels while the latter has larger roof openings and is covered by thermal water facilities(last picture).

2) Green Roof:This structure is used for the courtyard of the 6-people-housing. This kind of roof is very energy conservative and environmentaly friendly.

3) Roof with Drainage systems: This structure is applied for the couryard of the 2-people-housing and 4-people-housing. The idea here is that Toronto has lots of precipitation through the entire year, so we want to collect the rain or snowwater through the drainage system to irrigate the plants to save the water consumptions

The Neighborhood condition of Kensington market is all about public retail stores embrace private residence. Our intention is to against this public and private relationship, by using  private space to introduce an semi public space and eventually directs to the public space.   This semi public space will be a green pedestrian space directs from Kensingtion market to St. Andrew St.. It is incorporated with green house, sunlight filters and micro neigborhoods on sides. And at the meantime  creates a hang out place for market area, since the market is lack of a public recreational space.
NOTE: Mapping on the left is the context map of Kensington market.  It is given by our instructors in class.  The competition site is showing on the Flow diagram on the right hand side.    The two maps should go toghether, as the left hand side map gives the site context; The right hand side shows the geographic condition of the competition site.
